This poem is dedicated to my brother Joey, who is on the high needs end of the Autism spectrum.

A Heart I Hold Dear
My dearest brother, in you I want to truly confide.
Even if sometimes it’s in another world you reside.
Immersed in a universe of your own creation.
A cosmos here yet not, a place of different sensation.
Sometimes we’re at the bottom of an ocean, so far down the light can be too dim.
Yet we will find the surface, together we’ll learn how to swim.
Sometimes we’re stuck grasping a branchless tree, well over a thousand miles high.
Yet we will make our way down, together we’ll learn how to fly.
Sometimes we’re caught in a tornado, the blinding winds howling our demise.
Yet we will get through it, together we’ll learn how to keep open our eyes.
Sometimes we’re treading a mountain, scaling a path unbearably treacherous and long.
Yet we will make it to the top, together we’ll learn how to be strong.
Sometimes we’re on the edge of a cliff, the abyss overwhelmingly distant and deep.
Yet we will get over it, together we’ll learn how to leap.
Sometimes we’re lost in a secluded cavern, vast, dark, and far away from it all.
Yet we will find our way, towards us we’ll make a shooting star fall.
Sometimes you are wandering within yourself, but I know your heart longs to be free.
Yet we will always be back together, I will forever bring you back to me.
Let me hear your voice dear brother,
Please, show me your smile.
I was thinking maybe we could sit, just sit and talk for a while.
