Medical Interpreting

“They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel.”

- Maya Angelou

Following his return from China, Justin decided to move to Portland for a change of scenery and a fresh beginning. After spending so much time in China, he knew he wanted to enter into a profession that was able to utilize not only his language skills, but also his cultural knowledge and nuanced understanding. It took some time to find the direction, however he eventually found himself working with Worksource Oregon to search for possible careers that would not only take advantage of his skills, yet also left him feeling like he was making the impact he wanted to make. Within a few months of resource organizing and personal reflection, he came across the field of medical interpreting.

Having never been in the medical field prior, he was hesitant and unsure of his ability to secure a career in that profession. Not shortly after, he was made aware of a training program that would provide him with that background and path towards an occupation in the health sector. Justin was introduced to Svetlana’s Training for Interpreters, a program that specializes in preparing medical interpreters for all kinds of languages. With the slightly expensive costs, he was encouraged to apply for a scholarship. After tediously preparing an application, Justin was awarded the Individual Training Account Scholarship jointly through Worksource Oregon & Resource Connections of Oregon. Subsequently he spent 2 full months studying diligently every single day to ensure the care he provided was the best anyone could find.

After finishing his training program funded by the scholarship, Justin was connected with a few companies that hired medical interpreters. First and foremost was Linguava, a company that hires and individually contracts out interpreters to different locations. After a round of interviews, including one demonstration, he was hired to be a Medical Mandarin Interpreter. From there Justin was able to take on dozens of appointments, ranging widely in medical expertise as well as physical different locations. Sometimes it was in a hospital setting, a dental office, a physical therapy location, a personal doctors office, and so forth. Not only did Justin provide top-tier care to Mandarin-speaking patients, he was also able to be what one patient referred to as a Ding Xin Wan (定心丸) - which in traditional Chinese medicine is a herbal pill that is used to support emotional and mental well-being.
